Do you often find yourself stressed about the numbers your scale shows you? If the scale does not read like you think it should, do frustration and discouragement set in? Do you somehow believe you are doing something wrong in your health and wellness journey?
If this sounds like you, can I let you in on a little secret? The scale is not an accurate representation of your health. There are actually much better ways to assess how your body is changing. So much so that I actually think you should throw away your scale! You read that right. I want you to ditch the scale. Why? Because the scale cannot gauge how much muscle you have, your body fat percentage, the amount of energy you need to get through your day or the dozens of other positive health changes you are experiencing as a result of the lifestyle and eating habits you have made. In fact, the only thing the scale can show you is your relationship with gravity.
So what should you do instead to track changes? Measurements! Measuring different areas of your body is a great way to help you see some of the physical changes your body is going through without fixating on the numbers on the scale. It’s actually possible to GAIN weight with muscle, but lose inches, so taking measurements allows you to see the fat you have lost and the muscle you have gained. Personally, I do not even own a scale. In fact, when I made the decision to start exercising regularly, I only tracked my measurements. While I have not done follow up measurements in several months, I can tell my body composition has changed because my clothes fit better, I have more muscle definition and I feel great! All of that is enough motivation to keep me going without any need to look to the scale.
Can I encourage you today to do the same thing? Stop being a slave to the scale and instead focus on how you feel, the positive changes you are experiencing, and the changes you need to make that will lead to improvements in your body composition. You are worth so much more than what a number on the scale says, so focus on taking care of yourself in order to be the best version of you.
