This Changed Everything (And I Almost Didn’t Do It!)
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been just over seven months since my breast reduction surgery last November. I appreciate how kind and supportive many of you were when I shared about it and I thought it was time for an update.
The upside? It’s been life-changing.
I know that sounds dramatic, but I truly feel so much more confident in my body. For years I’ve been working out regularly, eating well, and doing what I can to feel strong, energetic, and joyful in midlife. But this change was a missing piece. I didn’t realize just how much discomfort I was tolerating and how many areas of my life were affected —until it was gone.
Wearing a bathing suit that fits, a strappy dress (sometimes without a bra ), or a blouse that buttons properly without gaping—it’s a whole new world. I can throw on a sports bra that isn’t a fortress. I can buy workout clothes and bras in “regular” stores. I look forward to getting dressed now!
While my bust size has changed by about 5–6 bra sizes, my overall body shape hasn’t shifted dramatically. But how I feel in my body has. And that’s everything.
There have been a few challenges too. While I’ve been mostly healed since after the first 8 weeks, full recovery has taken longer than I expected. The sensation in my breasts is still less, and some tenderness lingers. I was told full healing could take a year. I didn’t think that would be me… but it turns out, it is. It’s a good lesson in patience for impatient me.
There was a heat wave in Paris while my family and I were visiting, and I was so happy to be able to comfortably wear dresses without a bra for the first time!
Other big upsides? I’m lifting heavier weights, my posture is improving, and my chronic shoulder pain is completely gone. All of that feels so good.
So what’s the takeaway? This journey reminded me how important it is to keep working toward the strongest, healthiest version of myself—physically and mentally. And that’s something I want for you too.
The nutrition, movement, and mindset work I had in place before surgery made my recovery so much smoother—and helped me feel certain that this step was the right one for me.
If you’re considering breast reduction surgery and have questions, I’m an open book—don’t hesitate to reach out. Or if there’s something else that’s been holding you back or taking up mental space, I encourage you to look into what can help you feel better.
