Castles, cancelled trains and midlife lessons I didn’t expect
Between climbing steep castle paths, navigating cancelled trains, and sweating through what felt like four seasons in one day—our European family adventure was full of surprises. But what stood out most was a reminder I didn’t expect… one that applies way beyond travel and straight into how we take care of ourselves in midlife.
What a two weeks it was: Paris, Germany, and even a quick stop in London on our way home. The trip was full of memories, laughs, a few meltdowns (let’s be honest), and some time to reflect. I thought I’d share a few of those reflections with you.
One thing that surprised me? Despite how consistent I’ve been with my workouts, all the castle climbs, steps (hello, Eiffel Tower!), and uphill treks were still hard. I was able to do them, but I was definitely huffing and puffing.
It was a reminder that our bodies love variety. Just because we’re consistent with one type of movement doesn’t mean we’re challenging all the muscles we need for real-life strength and resilience. Walking, biking, and pickleball are great ways to stay active, but we also need to be intentional about changing things up—especially as we get older.
Another big takeaway? Flexibility—the mental kind.
We started the trip in a heat wave, had some rainy, chillier days in Germany, and then returned to hot temps in London. Some days went smoothly… and others? Not so much. We all took turns being grumpy, dealt with many hot and crowded trains, and navigated a few unexpected detours (like our train from Paris to Cologne not making it to its final destination ).
But even with the bumps, the trip was still filled with many beautiful memories.
I often hear: “I’ll start (insert healthy habit) once things settle down.” But the truth is - life doesn’t really settle. There’s always a mix of sunny and rainy days—both on vacation and at home. And if we wait for perfect conditions to begin something (whether that’s a workout, a new routine, or a health goal), we’ll be waiting forever.
So the question becomes: How can we live well in the midst of it all?
How can we find beauty, joy, and health, even when things are a little chaotic?
Because life is a mix—good and bad, happy and hard. But when we stay flexible and open (with our bodies and our mindset), we make room for the magic.
If you’ve been feeling like something’s off—low energy, extra stress, not sleeping well, weight that won’t budge, or just that sense that you’re not feeling as good as you know you could (or deserve to)—don’t wait for the “right” time.
Let’s get going on changing that.
